CITIES OF UKRAINE IN THE CONTEXT OF THE CONCEPT OF GLOBAL CITIES (DEMOGRAPHIC ASPECT)

Abstract

The article analyzes the demographic aspects of the development of Ukrainian cities in the context of the concept of global cities. The main demographic criteria for the allocation of cities as global and the list of potentially possible global cities on the territory of Ukraine, namely, cities such as Kiev, Kharkiv, Odessa, and the Dnipro, are presented. The dynamics of the population of 4 cities-millionaires during the period of independence of the country – 1991–2018 years has been analyzed. The dynamics of the share of population in the respective regions and the country as a whole for potential global cities during the research period was calculated and analyzed. The grouping of cities according to demographic characteristics in the context of the concept of global cities is made and the existing global cities are identified (the
city of Kyiv); promising global cities with significant influence in the region and the country (Kharkiv
city); unpromising global cities with little influence in the region and country (the cities of Odessa and
the Dnipro).
