THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE CARPATHIAN REGION AS A RESOURCE FOUNDATION FOR TOURISM DEVELOPMENT: A GEOGRAPHICAL PERSPECTIVE
Abstract
This article examines the natural environment as a fundamental resource base for tourism developmentwithin a geographical approach. This approach has enabled rethinking the role of the natural environmentand its spatial characteristics, and identifying natural and anthropogenic risks to ecosystem stability, environmental safety, and long-term development prospects. The scientific understanding of the role ofecosystems in the long-term competitiveness of tourist destinations has expanded. A number of scientificworks by national scientists on the importance of natural factors, environmental constraints, and theneed to balance tourist development of the territory have been analyzed. The theoretical approachto considering natural resources not only as a factor of development but also as a limiting and riskdeterminingfactor in the context of global transformations has been deepened. The concept of spatialdifferentiation in nature-oriented tourism has been substantiated, taking into account climate change andthe territory's ecological vulnerability. It has been found that relief, climate, water resources, biodiversity, and landscape structure should be considered as an integral part of natural resource potential, shaping theterritory's attractiveness and competitive advantages in tourist markets. The attention is focused on therelationship between the intensity of tourism development in territories and the level of anthropogenicpressure on natural complexes.Contemporary global challenges (climate change, soil degradation, and excessive tourist traffic) andtheir impact on the tourism resource base have been identified. The tourist load on the Carpathian region,in particular Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Zakarpattia, and Chernivtsi regions, has been analyzed. It has beendetermined that Ivano-Frankivsk region accounts for the dominant share of regional tourist flows dueto its unique destinations, both natural and anthropogenic. It has been shown that the growth of touristflows raises issues of rational nature management, environmental safety, and the preservation of naturalheritage. Within the geographical approach, the need for a comprehensive assessment of natural touristresources is justified, taking into account their spatial location, capacity, resistance to recreational load, and functional role in regional development. The importance of introducing various mechanisms toregulate tourist flows and optimize the intensity of tourist traffic in the territories is proven.
